Germanium
Germanium exhibits a wide transmission range within the infrared spectrum and is opaque within the visible spectrum, making it ideally suited for infrared components in lasers and optical systems. Due to germaniums high density it is not suitable for weight sensitive applications.
Properties
- Transmission from 2µm to 12µm
- High index of refraction (4.0) therefore an antireflective coating is advised.
- Low optical dispersion.
- Temperature dependent transmission, as temperature raises the material becomes more opaque.
- Can be AR coated with diamond, making it an extremely tough optic.
- Optical Characteristics.
